Michael Chonko

Michael, a seasoned mechanical engineer and Director of Engineering at SMRT, brings over 30 years of expertise in designing HVAC systems for a diverse range of clients, including government, corrections, research, healthcare, higher education, workplace, manufacturing, and various other facilities. Recognized as a respected voice in the industry, he provides technical guidance, peer reviews, and mentorship to support the professional growth of colleagues and emerging engineers as part of SMRT’s project work. Michael’s contributions extend to his membership in the Industry Advisor Group to the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Building Operations (OBO).

Since joining SMRT in 2000, Michael has demonstrated exceptional skill in evaluating and designing complex building engineering systems. Esteemed by clients and colleagues alike, he is known for delivering innovative, high-performance, and practical solutions to project teams. His dedication to advancing sustainability in building systems has been evident throughout his career. As a founding member and advocate of SMRT’s sustainability council, Michael has consistently championed the integration of energy-efficient, sustainable HVAC and plumbing systems into the built environment.
