The maximum security facility in Warren is the signature component of the redesigned and expanded Maine Department of Corrections. The 816-bed replacement prison, constructed at the site of the existing maximum custody facility, allowed the closure of the 100-year-old state prison in Thomaston. SMRT’s design encompassed seven buildings, constructed with a mixture of precast cells, wall panels, masonry and steel frame, separately housing various custody levels. The 400,000 s.f. facility increased staff efficiencies and reduced operational expenses, saving the State 14% of its operating costs.
