Lauded by the National Institute of Corrections (NCI) as a model facility, Maine’s first full-service women’s unit follows a treatment rather than incarceration model. SMRT designed the stand-alone, 70-bed Women’s Center to house inmates of all custody levels including close segregation and reception inmates. The facility is operated along the principles of direct supervision. Facilities for food service, laundry, medical needs, visitation, programs, industries and recreation enable the Center to operate on a nearly self-sufficient basis. Special accommodations are provided for maternity inmates.
