SMRT teamed with Pulitzer / Bogard Associates and The Louis Berger Group to design this addition to a 310-bed privately owned facility when inmate overcrowding forced the need for expansion. The 328-bed addition was delivered as a design-build project. Its challenges were significant: phased renovations to an occupied corrections facility, configuring the building on a tight urban site, adding four levels of housing to the new wing and extensive repurposing of existing spaces. The design team incorporated direct supervision principles. The facility’s current capacity is 711 inmates.
